Smithtown Residence
Smithtown, New York — 2,200 sq ft — Completed July 2009
When a young family in Smithtown welcomed their first child, they realized their small apartment could no longer contain the life they were building. They wanted space to gather with loved ones, room for their daughter to play and grow, and a home that felt open, modern, and full of light.
The result is Smithtown Residence — a thoughtfully expanded home that balances warmth and openness. The design introduces a new second-floor addition with a soaring cathedral ceiling, creating a bright playroom that adapts as the family’s needs evolve. Flooded with natural daylight and finished with simple, durable materials, the addition feels airy yet grounded — a natural extension of the home’s character.
Downstairs, the existing living and dining rooms retain their cozy charm with wood flooring, soft lighting, and a warm palette of materials. Together, the spaces create a gentle transition between the old and the new — between memory and growth.
Built under tight time constraints, the project relies on straightforward forms and readily available materials — vinyl siding, cultured stone, painted walls, and porcelain tile — proof that thoughtful design doesn’t require extravagance to feel special.
For the homeowners, the transformation represents more than just extra square footage. It’s a foundation for family life — a home that nurtures, adapts, and celebrates the everyday moments that make it uniquely theirs.
